Gemma - Tie belt (Free PDF pattern)

Size Guide

€2,95

Gemma is a simple tie belt, featuring rounded edges and a gap in the middle to showcase the bow closure at centre front.
Originally, this belt was designed to go with the April dress, one of our paid designs (shown in the photos). But the Gemma tie belt is such a simple, versatile design that we decided to make it available for free. We have also styled it with the Lola dress with the ruffle sleeve expansion.
You will find Gemma an easy and quick sew. Make Gemma in the same fashion fabric as your garment, or play around with contrast colours.
You can also play around with extra techniques if you are feeling adventurous, such as adding piping, gathers, or playing around with grainlines to achieve different effects.

Materials

Fabric

Gemma is designed for light to medium weight non-stretch wovens. Choose fabrics with a stable weave. Cotton chambray, cotton voile, linen, and stable viscose/rayon are all ideal.

Interfacing

Sizes 28 to 40: 0.9m (1 yard) of lightweight woven fusible interfacing.
Sizes 42 to 52: 1.2m (1.3 yards) of lightweight woven fusible interfacing.

Notions

Thread.

Fabric requirements

The tie belt can either be cut on the straight grain or crossgrain (see chart below). You may wish to cut on the crossgrain either to save fabric, or if you are using a directional print. If you do change the grainline of the tie belt, keep the interfacing cut on the original grainline; this will keep the tie belt from stretching out of shape.
